Proof your designs for print

  • Check Font Size: Just because it looks big on screen doesn’t mean it’ll be as readable when printed. Different print products have different recommended font sizes. We generally recommend not going lower than font size 7.

💡 TIP: Viewing your design at 100% zoom will also give you an idea of how small or big the font size is.

  • Check the color: We suggest using CMYK colors to help make sure that the colors are printer-friendly. This is because colors don’t look the same on screens and on paper.

  • Turn on bleed and margins: Check if the elements on your design are within margins (or safe zone).

    • There are no (unwanted) white edges on your design.

    • There’s no element near the edges at risk of getting trimmed.

    • The print design doesn't have animations or videos. Learn more about using margins and bleed.

To turn on bleed and margins go to "file" > "settings" then select show margins and show print bleed.

If you see white gaps around the design edges, resize or stretch your background to cover them. Stretch elements, that you don’t mind being cut, around the edges as well.

  • Check image quality and resolution: Using high-quality images is important in ensuring clear and crisp prints. If possible, upload only images in 300 dpi—the recommended image resolution for print. You can also use images and elements from our media library as they are in high resolution.

Quickly check for image quality by zooming in at 200% on your design. If the images look blurry or pixelated, they most likely won’t print well. Learn about zooming in.

A better way to check for image resolution is from your computer’s files. Learn how to check for image resolution.

Print the proof

Download your design from Canva by going to "share" > "download" then select file type PDF Print and check "crop marks and bleed"

If you have a home or office printer, we recommend printing the PDF proof of your design. This is one of the best ways to check for font size and image quality.

Download a PDF proof as part of the order process. Otherwise, you can download a Print PDF separately. Learn more about printing designs using a personal printer.

Make sure to print the design in its actual dimensions (100% scale). Check your printer’s scale settings for this.
