Follow these simple steps to remove the background from an image using Canva’s Background Remover tool.

How to use the Background Remover in Canva Pro

Step 1: Upload Your Image to Canva

  1. Open Canva and go to your Uploads section.

  2. Click Upload Files and select the image from your computer.

  3. Once uploaded, your image will appear at the top of the Uploads section.

Step 2: Add Your Image to a Page

  1. Drag your uploaded image onto a Canva page.

  2. Click to select the image.

Step 3: Remove the Background

  1. With your image selected, click Edit Image in the top toolbar.

  2. Select BG Remover.

  3. Canva will automatically remove the background.

Step 4: Touch Up the Background Removal (If Needed)

  1. Click BG Remover again to open additional options.

  2. Use the Erase tool to remove unwanted areas.

    • Adjust the Brush Size for precise editing.

    • Click and drag over any areas that need to be erased.

  3. Use the Restore tool if Canva removed something you want to keep.

  4. Toggle Show Original Image to compare your edits with the original.

  5. Once satisfied, click the Back Arrow to exit editing.

Step 5: Save Your Image with a Transparent Background

  1. Click Share (top-right corner).

  2. Click Download and choose PNG as the file type.

  3. Check the Transparent Background box.

  4. Click Download to save your edited image.

Step 6: Reuse Your Transparent Image

  • Option 1: Upload your saved transparent image to Canva for future use.

  • Option 2: Simply copy and paste the edited image directly into your design.

Now you have a clean, professional-looking image with a transparent background, ready to use in your Canva designs!


How to Remove the Background from an Image Without Canva Pro

If you don’t have Canva Pro, you can still remove the background of an image for free using remove.bg.

Step 1: Remove the Background Using remove.bg

  1. Go to remove.bg.

  2. Click Upload Image and select the image from your computer.

  3. The site will automatically remove the background.

Step 2: Touch Up the Image (If Needed)

  1. Click Edit to manually adjust the background removal.

  2. Use the Erase tool to remove unwanted areas.

  3. Use the Restore tool to bring back any details you want to keep.

  4. Adjust the Brush Size for precise touch-ups.

Step 3: Download and Upload to Canva

  1. Click Download to save your edited image as a PNG.

  2. Open Canva and go to the Uploads section.

  3. Click Upload Files and select your saved transparent image.

  4. Drag your uploaded image onto your Canva design.

This effect is called Positioning—it helps create depth by placing text in front of or behind an element.

Step 1: Select the Image or Text

  1. Click on the image or text you want to adjust.

Step 2: Adjust the Position

  1. Click Position in the top toolbar.

  2. Under the Arrange tab, select:

    • Forward to bring the element in front.

    • Backward to move it behind another element.

  3. Adjust until the text and image interact for a layered, 3D effect.
