How to Remove the Background from an Image in Canva

Follow these simple steps to remove the background from an image using Canva’s Background Remover tool.

How to remove the background of an image (with Canva Pro)

  1. Upload Your Image to Canva

  2. Add Your Image to a Page

  3. Remove the Background: Click Edit Image in the top toolbar. Select BG Remover. Canva will automatically remove the background.


How to remove the background of an image (without Canva Pro)

If you don’t have Canva Pro, you can still remove the background of an image for free using remove.bg.

  1. Go to remove.bg.

  2. Click Upload Image and select the image from your computer.

  3. The site will automatically remove the background.

  4. Click Download to save your edited image as a PNG.

  5. Open Canva and go to the Uploads section.

  6. Click Upload Files and select your saved transparent image.

  7. Drag your uploaded image onto your Canva design.


How to add an outline to your image

  1. Click on the image you wish to add an outline to.

  2. Click Edit > Shadows > Outline

  3. Scroll down and adjust the color and size of the outline.


How to reposition your image in front of or behind text

  1. Click on the image or text you want to adjust.

  2. Click Position in the top toolbar.

  3. Under the Arrange tab, select:

    1. Forward to bring the element in front.

    2. Backward to move it behind another element.

  4. Adjust until the text and image interact for a layered, 3D effect.


How to add cutouts with outlines to your design

  1. In Canva, search for an image (e.g. “iced coffee”) under Elements → Photos.

  2. Click on the image → click Edit Photo → select Background Remover.💡 If you don't have Canva Pro, refer to the instructions on how to remove the background without Canva Pro.

  3. Once the background is removed, scroll to Shadows → choose Outline.

  4. Change the outline color to white.

  5. Adjust the outline thickness as needed.

  6. To reuse the same outline style, click the styled image → click Copy Style (paint roller icon) → click on another image to apply it.
