What is an Instagram Comment Automation?
You've seen posts on Instagram that say "Comment *keyword* and I'll send over the info!" That is a comment automation at work. Here's an example 👇
Setting Up Your Manychat Automation - Step-By-Step
Step 1: Sign Up and Connect Your ManyChat Account
Go to ManyChat and sign up for a free account.
Connect your Facebook Business Page or Instagram Business Account (depending on your automation goals).
Authorize the necessary permissions to allow ManyChat to access your account data.
Step 2: Set Up a New Automation
On the left-hand menu, click Automation.
This will show all current automations. If this is your first one, it may be blank.
Click the blue “+ New Automation” button.
Choose a template.
Recommended: Auto DM links from comments (sends a DM when someone comments a keyword on your post).
Step 3: Choose Where the Automation Applies
You can set the automation to:
Work on specific post or reel,
Work on any post or reel
Work on next post or reel
NOTE: some of these may be only accessible to paid manychat accounts.
Select the post you'd like your automation to work on.
3. Turn on “Reply to their comment under the post.”
Customize your reply text to sound natural and human. Examples:
“Headed your way!”
“Just sent it to your DMs!”
“Yay, can’t wait for you to check it out!”
You can add multiple variations so the replies feel less automated.
Step 4: Choose Your Keyword Trigger
Decide what word or phrase people must comment to trigger the DM.
Example: guide, city name, or a local business name.
Keep it specific to avoid triggering from random comments or emojis.
Example for a Fall Guide:
Keyword = “guide”
Avoid selecting “any word or reaction” to maintain control.
Step 5: Customize the Direct Message
Write a personal message that will be sent right after someone comments your keyword. Example:
“Hi! Can’t wait for you to discover all the fun in [City Name] this fall.”
Customize the smaller text box underneath that lets them claim your resource:
Button label: “Get the guide here.”
This button triggers the next step of your automation.
Once the user clicks that button they have officially given permission to send them the link.
Step 6: Customize the link that gets sent.
Once they click the first button, set up the next message that actually delivers the resource. Example:
“Sweet! Click below to download your guide.”
2. Add another button that links to your content:
Button label: “Download the Guide” or “Access the Resource.”
Link: Your landing page, Canva presentation, Google Doc, or listing URL.
Pro tip: Use a landing page (like Flodesk or ConvertKit) to collect their name and email before giving access. This helps you grow your email list and stay connected with potential clients.
Step 7: Add a Follow-Up Message (Optional)
Turn on the “Check-In” toggle if you want ManyChat to follow up automatically.
Set a delay (e.g., 30 minutes, 5 hours, or 23 hours).
3. Example message:
“Hey, don’t forget to grab your guide! So much good stuff in there.”
Note: ManyChat automations must send follow-ups within 23 hours to comply with Facebook’s rules.
Step 8: Go Live and Monitor
Once you’re happy with your setup, click Go Live Now.
You can always:
Edit your automation anytime.
Stop it if you no longer want it active.
How To Set Up DM Automations In Stan Store
In this tutorial, you can follow along to set up a Stan Store automation.
Step One: Navigate to Auto DM Page.
Log into Stan Store and
Navigate to "Auto DM" on the left hand side at the bottom.
Click "create auto-reply"
Step Two: Link Your Instagram Account & Create New Reply Automation
Click the "gear wheel" next to the Instagram Icon to link your Instagram account.
Click "Create Reply" on the top right hand side.
Step Three: Choose where your automation will trigger.
You can set it to automate a reply when a user DMs you, comments on a post, or both. Use the drop down menu to choose your preference.
Step Four: Choose your Keywords & Enable on Posts
Submit your custom keyword (limit 5) by typing what you'd like your keyword to be and hitting "enter" to submit.
Decide if you want the automation to trigger on all posts or only specific posts by clicking "on all posts".
From there you can enable the automation to run on only specific posts or all posts. Click "enable" to save your choice.
Step Five: Customize Comment Replies
If you'd like to automate comment replies, you can use the drop down menu to select "comment back". It will open up three prewritten comment replies. You can customize those reply by typing in the boxes and writing your own replies.
Step Six: Customize your DM message & Link
In the text box, type your own custom message which users will receive in their DMs after they comment the keyword.
2. Click "+ Add a Link Buttton" to set up what the button will say and where it will link.
3. Customize the button text and link to where they can download the guide whether that's your Flodesk landing page, a direct link, or other. Click "Add" to save.
Step Seven: Save draft or publish if you're ready for your automation to go live.
