Learn how to edit photos directly in Canva — including removing backgrounds, adding an outline to your photo, adjusting background transparency, and replacing images in your C&C templates.

Written by Nola Gehring

Step 1: Add your photo to the template

  • Go to your Uploads folder and find the photo you want to use.

  • Click on it once to bring it onto the canvas.

Step 2: Remove the background

If you're on Canva Pro:

  • Click on your photo, then click Background Remover in the top toolbar.

  • Canva will automatically remove the background.

If you're on the free plan:

  • Go to remove.bg and upload your photo.

  • Once it's processed, download the image to your computer.

  • Upload the downloaded image to Canva and use it from there.

Step 3: Add an outline to your photo (optional)

If you want your photo to stand out from the background, you can add an outline around it.

  • Click on your photo, then click Edit.

  • Under the Shadows section, find and click Outline.

  • Adjust the color (try a lighter color so it stands out), thickness, and intensity to your liking.

Step 4: Replace the background image

  • Go to your Uploads folder and upload the background image you want to use.

  • Drag and drop it onto the template.

  • Double-click the image to reposition it within the frame.

  • Click anywhere outside the image to save your changes.

Step 5: Adjust background transparency (optional)

If your background image is making your text hard to read, you can lighten or darken it.

  • Click on the background image.

  • Click the Transparency tool in the toolbar.

  • Drag the slider up or down until your text is easy to read. (50 is a good starting point.)
